Seminar on Promoting Touring Exhibitions, 22 October 2010, Birmingham
TEG's next seminar on PROMOTING TOURING EXHIBITIONS will be held on FRIDAY 22nd OCTOBER 2010 at BIRMINGHAM MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY: GAS HALL.
The seminar will provide delegates with an introduction to marketing techniques and strategies, looking at how one can identify key target audiences and deliver your product to them. The day will explore both how to promote exhibitions for hire and also how to market the hired exhibition to the general public in the host venue. Consisting of a mixture of practical advice and case studies from large and small organisations it will be an excellent opportunity to discover new marketing skills, brush up on your existing ones, and network with other people and organisations in the touring exhibitions world.  For further details and to book online please see the Seminars page.

Research

Mapping the Touring Landscape
A research report into the state of the touring exhibition sector

The report on the findings of TEG's National Research Project 2005-07 was launched on 1 May at the Design Museum in London.  Members of TEG, contributors to the research, associates, representatives of the press and stakeholders attended the event.

Photos of the event can be viewed (pdf, 1.8MB).

The report covers wide-ranging issues and findings concerning exhibition touring and programming and contains recommendations for the future development of the touring sector, relating to organisational, regional and national infrastructure needs. The research project, funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation as part of TEG’s organisational development programme, has been carried out by independent consultant, Sally Fort and more than 250 organisations have contributed to surveys and consultations, aimed at mapping touring activity across the UK. For more details, please see the press release.

A copy of the Executive Summary of the report will be sent to all TEG members during May 2007 and supplementary papers, including a fuller overview of each research topic and details of case studies, will be available on the web site for download by members only. The Committee will welcome your views on the findings and recommendations in the report, which will play a key role in enabling TEG to structure and prioritise its work for the future, plan advocacy and campaigning, and make effective contributions to national touring and cultural initiatives.

TEG is grateful to the many individuals and organisations who have contributed time, expertise, information and opinion to the research project throughout its development.  For details of contributors, please see the acknowledgements (pdf 63KB).

The Executive Summary is available for download here (pdf, 1MB).

TEG members can access the Research Papers and Appendices here.

TEG's initial recommendations to the touring sector, based on the findings of the research report, include measures to maximise the potential of touring exhibitions to develop audiences and improve access to collections and call for a more unified collaborative approach by funders and stakeholders to strengthen the touring infrastructure.  For more details, see the press release.  TEG will be issuing further statements on the report's conclusions and recommendations as debate on all aspects of the research continues.
